Saint Louis area police have another killing of an unarmed, black teen, according to witnesses on the scene. However, the STL police department is telling a different story.

18 year old, Vonderrick Myer. was shot and killed by an off-duty Saint Louis police officer Wednesday night. The officer involved in the shooting hasn’t been identified yet, but has been put on administrative leave while the investigation takes place.

Sam Dotson, the St. Louis Police Chief said the teenager had a gun, fired on the officer at least three times and was shot 17 times. He mentioned the gun jammed on the teen, which is why he didn’t fire more times at the officer.

Dotson, who came to the scene and gave an update to reporters after midnight, said the officer had been in a car when he saw three males in the 4100 block of Shaw Boulevard at about 7:30 pm Wednesday. One of the males started to run away but stopped. The officer did a U-turn and then all three ran. The officer drove through streets following them, and then he got out and chased them on foot.

Assistant Police Chief Alfred Adkins said the teen the officer was chasing jumped from some bushes and struggled with the officer. Dotson said a physical confrontation escalated into gunfire.

Witnesses to the events have a different recollection of what happened. Many are saying the young teen only had a sandwich in his hands and no weapon.

The skepticism over the police report and the overall treatment of young, black men and women in the ST. Louis area has lead to more protest in the streets and unrest in the homes.
