The Weave Loan Store has opened in Detroit, Michigan with the slogan, “Now You can Afford to be Beautiful” to much fanfare, concern and disgust in the black community. One can get rid of their “ugly” natural hair in exchange for the “beautiful”, long weave of another persons hair, as the slogan implies.

The hair weave industry in America is booming, particularly in the black community. Women are now spending over a billion dollars annually on weaves and the some estimates have the number much higher than that and rising in the near future.

We have adapted, as a culture and community, the western, white ideals of beauty and want our women to look like this image as much as possible. This includes having long, straight hair of various colors.

Weave is a great way for black women to achieve this desired look and there are a lot of serious businesses surrounding the industry.
