MADISON – The University of Wisconsin-Madison student government is demanding free classes for African-American students. Wednesday, February 15, Madison Associate Students state that African Americans were legally barred from education during slavery and that the main school remains out of reach of students of color.
They require free access, tuition and housing for all African Americans, including former detainees.
The solution is being reviewed, says John Lucas, a UW-Madison spokesperson. Afro-American students at school have grown from 11% to 15% in the last decade.
Racial incidents have marked campus life in recent months, including an adept dressed in an offensive suit at a football game and the arrest of an African American student for anti-racist graffiti.
State lawmakers set tuition fees. Representatives of the budgeting committee of the Legislature did not comment immediately. Expected completion is effective.
