New York Police have charged 28-year-old James Harris Jackson with murder after he traveled from Baltimore to NYC with the intention to kill black men. He succeeded in killing one black man before turning himself in and telling police he came to the media capital to ‘make a statement’.
After wandering the streets he came across a 66-year-old black man, Timothy Caughman, on Monday around 11pm.
He repeatedly stabbed Caughman with a mini sword. Caughman was able to get to the police precint but sadly died later in hospital.
On Wednesday morning Jackson walked into a Times Square police substation and said “‘I’m the person you’re looking for,’”, he told the police he had knives in his pockets. He was searched, taken into custody and charged.
A black mini sword was found in his possession and was filed as the murder weapon.
William Aubry, assistant chief of the New York City Police Department said that:
“The reason why he picked New York is ’cause it’s the media capital of the world,… And he wanted to make a statement.”
Aubry went onto say:
“Based on statements that he made as well as a preliminary review of video, it reveals that the attack on Timothy Caughman was clearly racially motivated,” and that Jackson “was specifically intending to target male blacks for assault.”
He also added that “It’s well over 10 years that he’s been harboring these feelings of hate towards male blacks.”
