Should Black Business Hire White People? (NO, And Here Is Why…)

I don’t know if this is something that’s been discussed much but I wanted to throw my hat in the ring and say that in most cases black owned businesses should NOT be hiring white people, EVEN in some cases where all black applicants are seemingly a little less qualified…. I know to many this sounds crazy and many white people would call me ‘Racist’ (which is a baseless claim, call me bigoted, sure!) but hear me out, deal?

I’m a big proponent of black people starting and owning businesses in black communities. And in this sense I don’t mean only to serve the black community or to do “black services”. ALL kinds of business catering to whomever wants to use them are welcome and will benefit not just the communities they are set up in but the country as a whole.

The more small-medium business we have in a community, the more diverse the ownership, the stronger the whole country is, for all people of every color and socio-economic level (apart from the 1%).

I’m also a believer in diversity and in some cases I think affirmative action is a good thing. When a large business or school is forced to fill a certain quota with ‘minority’ places this can only be good until a balance has been met.

And frankly, until Black Americans have a balance which is fair in the USA I think small black owned business should focus on hiring black people and favor them above whites.

As a young white man, for example, you are welcome to go and work in pretty much any organisation. As a young black man your chances are seriously reduced SO it’s up to black business to really give a shot to people, give passion and career opportunities, steady cash and hopefully a more unified steady future and maybe they’ll branch out into their own business one day!

This isn’t about black business saying black people are better, it’s about stepping in to help the balance and help where a business owner really can. A young black woman will have a harder time finding a job than a white counterpart SO employ her, take a small risk even if she is slightly under qualified or under experienced and nurture the untapped talent.

Giving people a chance can backfire BUT it can open up an amazing world of opportunity and grow your business in ways you never thought.

Now, that being said, there are SO many qualified black people out there, amazingly well educated aspiration people who need a job. So, I don’t think hiring black will ever be a problem but it should be a strong preference.

NOW, there are cases where I think hiring white is of course ok. You may genuinely need a specific kind of person and a white applicant may genuinely be the perfect choice. Of course, do it. You may be helping out a family friend or family member, do that too!

I’m not advocating an entirely bigoted policy but I do want to see more black people in work and the black community can do a lot to help that.
