REALLY? Joe’s Crab Shack Used A Black Man’s Lynching Photo As Table Decor, They’ve Apologized But Is This Enough?

Tyrone Williams and Chauntyll Allen were preparing to dine at Joe’s Crab Shack in Roseville, Minn this past Wednesday. According to an account provided by the NAACP, they noticed a photo being used as decor on the table.

This of course is common, it’s always kind of interesting to stare at the past HOWEVER, the pair looked and realised that this photo was a little culturally insensitive.

The photo showed a bunch of white people gathered to watch a good ol’ hanging, captioned “Hanging at Groesbeck, Texas, on April 12th, 1895.”…. A speech bubble with computer printed text had also been added, presumably by Joe’s themselves “All I said was that I didn’t like the gumbo.”.

See the photo they took below:

Tyrone Williams posted to Facebook:

This is on our table at Joe’s Crab shack in Roseville, MN it’s the lynching of two black men in Groesbeck, Texas in 1895 they we’re accused of robbing and murdering a white man with a rock it’s sad this is the image we have to look at in a Crab shack that has nothing to do with Texas it’s crazy how a brother can’t get a break me and Chauntyll Allen can’t get a break lol we just wanted some all you can eat Crab legs smh and now we got to go. We can’t take this shit no mo

The President of the Minneapolis NAACP, Nekima Levy-Pounds, said the incident that this:

“demonstrates that racism is still alive and well in this country.”

“It is sickening to know that someone would make a mockery of black men being savagely lynched and then use that imagery for decorative purposes in a restaurant,”

They demanded an immediate apology from the corporate offices and immediate removal:

“of any and all lynching or otherwise racially-offensive imagery”

The also demanded donations to local African American organisations as part of the apology!

Joe’s Crab Shack parent company did issue an apology. David Catalano of COO Ignite Restaurant Group said that the image was removed immediately and that the company understands that the photo used at the Roseville restaurant was offensive.

“We sincerely apologize to our guests who were disturbed by the image and we look forward to continuing to serve the Roseville community,”

Is this enough?
