DYK: Africa’s First Solar Powered Bus Is Launching In Uganda (and it can travel for 8 hours straight).

The ‘Kayoola’ whic loosely translates as ‘mass carrier’ is launching in Uganda soon!

The solar powered bus created by Kiira Motors Corporation is part of a vision to spearhead Uganda’s auto industry.

The bus seats 35 and can travel for about 80km, around 8 hours!

The battery is powered by rood situated solar panels, the batter alternates between running and charging helping reach the full range.

The innovative bus was put together using local materials and local workforce making it truly a Ugandan product and definitely a good profile for the growing industry.

During the test drive at Namboole stadium on Sunday Mr Isaa Musasizi spoke to journalists.

He said:

“Uganda is privileged to be among the 13 countries in the whole world that are situated along the equator. We decided to take advantage of this strategic position to improve transport technology,”

And:

“The body is typically our Roofings material and was worked on by hand. Also, the battery banks which are stainless steel were also fabricated from here. Uganda possesses polished skills to deliver automotives today.”
