Chicago Cop Retires with Six Figure Pension To Dodge Punishment

A Chicago Police Department cop resigned on February 12 due to what is seen as a sheer move to dodge disciplinary action for his role in the Koschman case. Lt. Denis Walsh was among the six police officers recommended for disciplinary action after he was accused of giving false reports during the investigation of a homicide case involving the nephew of former mayor Richard Daley.

Walsh is believed to have flouted departmental policies during the investigation into the death of David Koschman. Koschman died in 2004 after a fight with the mayor’s nephew, Richard Vanecko. The investigations carried out by the CPD team, of which Walsh was part, concluded that Vanecko had acted in self-defense.

His resignation is seen as an elaborate attempt to evade possible severe repercussions after the office of the Chicago Inspector General issued a series of recommendations which included termination. His resignation is also seen as a wise move to cover his bases, given he will be collecting more than $90,000 a year worth of pension. Having safely exited the force, albeit disgracefully, Walsh is therefore no longer subject to discipline.
