Baltimore Orioles center fielder Adam Jones says that he was on the receiving end of racism at from Boston Red Sox fans after the two teams recently faced off.
After the game he says:
“A disrespectful fan threw a bag of peanuts at me. I was called the N-word a handful of times tonight.” He than sarcastically added, “Thanks. Pretty awesome.”
Somewhere between 30-60 people were removed because of the incidents and after many representatives of the team and city responded.
Red Sox president Sam Kennedy issued a statement:
“The Red Sox want to publicly apologize to Adam Jones and the entire Orioles organization for what occurred at Fenway Park Monday night. No player should have an object thrown at him on the playing field, nor be subjected to any kind of racism at Fenway Park. The Red Sox have zero tolerance for such inexcusable behavior, and our entire organization and our fans are sickened by the conduct of an ignorant few.” The mayor of Boston, Marty Walsh, also issued a statement saying, “This is unacceptable and not who we are as a city. These words and actions have no place in Fenway, Boston, or anywhere. We are better than this.”
And the Massachusetts governor took to twitter to denounce the fans:
Fenway fans behavior at the #RedSox game last night was unacceptable & shameful. This is not what Massachusetts & Boston are about.

The fan who threw the peanuts was kicked out but Jones doesn’t think this is enough, he said:
“It’s called a coward. What they need to do is that instead of kicking them out of the stadium, they need to fine them 10 grand, 20 grand, 30 grand. Something that really hurts somebody.”
He called a suspension “a slap on the wrist”
No further action against the fan has yet been announced.
