Since Selema we are hearing the name Ava DuVernay a lot more. Now Ms. DuVernay has created her first television show called Queen Sugar. The show Queen Sugar is based on the book Queen Sugar written by Natalie Baszile.
It’s a story about an African American woman from Los Angeles who unexpectedly inherits a sugar cane farm in Louisiana and decides to relocate for a new start in life.
DuVernay chose an all-female directorial team, many of whom were independent African American film directors. She admitted that this new venture has been a bit challenging for her because it’s a little bit different from directing and filming a movie but she’s loving every bit of it.
She gives kudos to Shonda Rhimes and the trail she is blazing to help directors such as herself venture in the world of primetime. Thirteen episodes of Queen Sugar will air on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN later this year. Congratulations Ava DuVernay we hope for your continued success in this new venture!
