It is sad we need to have this discussion in 2014, but we would be foolish  not to. In the awake of police violence and brutality toward black people over the past few decades, it is about time we arm ourselves with some basic knowledge and understanding.

In this video below, retired NYPD Detective, Carlton “Chucky” Berkeley, gives you some valuable insight into the mind of police officers, your rights, and what you need to tell your children when they are stopped by the police. His information is short and to the point, but powerful.

retired nypd officerDetective Berkeley begins his talk by recommending everyone start by watching the documentary called “Central Park 5”. This is a documentary that examines the 1989 case of five black and Latino teenagers who were convicted of raping a white woman in Central Park. After having spent between 6 and 13 years each in prison, a serial rapist confessed to the crime.

He recommends this documentary so you can get an inside look at how police officers will manufacture a case to feel like they have done something. It is a terrifying story that is real and a real possibility for people in our community.

Detective Berkeley continues with some instructions for you to never allow the police to speak to your love ones. And if you make a mistake and allow them to do so, it is in your rights to stop them as soon as you remember you should have never allow them to speak in the first place.

Turning to your children, he offers some very sound advice and examples of what they should say to the police officers who are stopping them in an area. This includes the most powerful statements of “Am I under arrest” and the proper use of silence.
