Good Cops Around The Country Should Descend On Ferguson, Mo. To Stand In Solidarity With The Black Community

I’m very upset about the number of black men being slaughtered at the hands of the police around the country, but want to change the discussion again for a bit. What if the so called “good cops” from around the country came to Ferguson, Mo. to protest the killing of Michael Brown?

Michael Brown was shot multiple times in the head and chest while unarmed, hands above his head and in compliance with the officers request. He died on the scene and was left to rot in the sun and elements for hours as the police “secured” the area in hopes of preventing a riot.

police marchingThere have been several riots and protest in the area since this tragic event has happened.

However, what if something a bit different happened?

What if the so called “good cops” from around the country fly into the small city of Ferguson, not to assist in beating down the frustrated citizens who are watching their young black men being killed, but to join them in their protest?

Hopefully, the protest and demonstrations would be peaceful, but think about the impact this could have? This could change relationships between police officers and the black community. This could change the conversation in Ferguson over the apparent murder of a young, college bound, black male at the hands of a police office.

This could change everything.

Police officers are notorious for closing ranks and protecting their own, even when they are doing the wrong thing. The thinking is we are a special fraternity and we must protect one another at all cost.

But I want to appeal to the sensible police officers out there. How can you be considered a “good cop” when you approve justice that stops at your fraternities front door?

Everyone else is expected to abide by the law and not kill other people, but because y’all carry a badge it is perfectly fine.

Despite the fact that you might not pull the trigger, you may as well in the eyes of a community that seems to be under siege by your kind.

If you really want to change the perception of police officers around the country, get on a plane, fly to Fergeson, MO. and join the people as they protest, march and display their outrage over the killing of young black men.

When you return home, you will find a  better climate on your job. You will find more support in the community for the dangers and ills of your job. You will find more compassion from the people, but someone has to extend the olive branch to try and mend the rift.

If not, then all you so called “good cops” will continue to be lumped together with the ones that are disrespecting the badge, oath you take and honor you should get on the streets of your community.

What if the “good cops” actually gave a damn about the people?

Keep up to date with everything going on in the Urban Intellectuals Universe.
