Black Enough? Disney’s Zendaya To Star In Lifetime’s Biopic on Aaliyah

Lifetime has announce their casting for their biopic movie on the singer Aaliyah and the black community seems to be disgusted at the selection.

The complaint seems to stem from the fact that the star actress, Zendaya, isn’t black enough to play the African American signer in the movie. In fact, this is seen as just another slap in the face as Hollywood continues to “whiten” up history and culture with their non-black depiction of our people on the big and small screen.

Aaliyah MovieIf you recall, Aaliya Dana Haughton died in a 2001 plane crash. She was headed to the Bahamas when the plane went down filled with the pilot, the singer and members of her video crew. Aaliya was just 22 years old and just beginning to break into movies.

The singer has been a strong inspiration for the African American community, but has also inspired Zendaya as well.

The well known Disney actress was recently on “Dancing With the Stars” and says “She’s been an inspiration and influence in my whole career, her talent still shines brighter (than) ever, all I wanna do is honor her….and show how much she accomplished in only 22 years….she’s beautiful inside and there will never be another Aaliyah, I just hope to share her beautiful story, and make her proud up in heaven.”

However, Zendaya is Black, but is she black enough?

The actress, Zendaya, is black as it turns out. Her father is a African American and her mother is German, Irish, and English in ancestry. Technically, she is black, so this shouldn’t be much of an issue, right?

Wrong. Apparently, the black community feels she doesn’t identify with the black community or culture.

While projecting a white appearance and image to the world, she conceals the fact that she has is black and doesn’t relate well with the culture.

In addition, many feel there are so many talented black actresses out there whom are more than capable of taking on this role that are clearly black and relate well with the culture that one of them should have been selected for this role to play Aaliyah in her story.

What are your thoughts?

Do you feel Zendaya is black enough?
