Living Black and Sleeping White

Today interracial dating seems to be more popular than at any time in my recent memory. A couple of my siblings married white women, my sons have dated white women I have mixed relatives, which is not uncommon. My nephew married a white woman. I have dated white men.

I wish I could remember how I got into the relationship but that is neither here not there, I did. He is a nice person and we had a good time together. I was always astonished by the response of African American men when they saw us together.

One evening my friend left the table to pay the bill while I was getting ready to leave the table. All night I had been getting really cutting stares from two brothers having dinner together. I thought if we got up together there might be a confrontation.

When I finally got up they were still watching me eating and talking. As I moved towards them, they put their forks down and mean mugged me until I left the restaurant. It felt as though I was being judged and judged severely.

I was a little rattled but I thought, why are they not with African American women? Yeah, I know I was just being petty. Was I hurt? Perhaps a little. But I was more startled than anything else by their response.

Typically, when we were out we would be all over the city and a few out of town trips. I never made eye contact with any other black men so that I could avoid any confrontations or rebukes.

Whenever I see an interracial couple I have to remember we have choices and just because they choose a person of another race does not diminish who I am.

Although I consider myself a radical I know that matters of the heart must be viewed through a different lense.
