After storming to victory at the Summer 2016 Olympics Simon Manuel has gone from strength to strength and now at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest she has upset the world champion by nabbing gold and setting a new American record!

Manuel beat Sweden’s Sarah Sjöström with her new American record of 52.

31 seconds.

Maybe Manuel’s confidence grabbed her the victory, she was quoted saying:

“I always think I have a shot,”

“It’s kind of been ingrained in me with [having] my two older brothers and just always wanting to keep up with somebody.”

Last August at the Olympics she became the first ever black woman to win a gold medal in an individual swimming event after tying first place with Canada’s Penny Oleksiak in the 100m freestyle.
