11 Kappas Arrested At UGA: Has The Time Come For Historically Black Fraternities To End Hazing?

You have probably heard this story before. Modern day black fraternities are non-hazing organizations.

They don’t participate in the “beating in” of their members. However, a report comes out to the contrary.

It happened again. This time at the University of Georgia following a so called “pledging event”. 9 of the 11 accused in the hazing have turned themselves in to the authorities. They are all members of Zeta Iota chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, according to UGA Police chief Jimmy Williamson.

frat brothrs arrestedWilliamson said, “the police department obtained warrants yesterday, charging 11 individuals with hazing; there’s actually a criminal code that covers hazing, and the 11 individuals had warrants taken out. They’ve all been contacted and told they need to turn themselves into the sheriff’s office.”

Police obtained warrants on Thursday for the members after student affairs alerted the authorities about the pledging event. The incident happened in late January.

Authorities say pledges were “struck with fists” during a pledge process. However, authorities believe it only happened once. The Zeta Iota chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi was suspended during the investigation.

What jumps out at me on this story is “authorities believe it only happened once.” WHAT!?? If it only happened once, this means the people on line were soft as pumpkin pie. There is no other way to put it because from what I understand the first “sessions” are weak feelers just to see who can take what.

With that being said, maybe it is time for fraternities and sororities to do away with this “unwritten” process of hazing. Because let’s face it, we all know the organizations are against it as a whole because of the pending lawsuits that follow, but the individual members believe it is a right of passage and an important bonding period that takes place linking the past with the present members.

However, i’m not too sure this is important enough to continue if people are going to keep going to the authorities placing more and more black men in the “justice system”.

This is a different era we live in today. Young black men and women are spoiled, coddled by their parents, so when the fire of a hazing session are put on them, they fold and tell the authorities. They can’t take it, so why should fraternities and sororities continue to expose themselves to the legal system?

Or is the whole fraternity, sorority thing just over rated, stupid and shouldn’t be considered anyway?
