Why does it seem like we never get to have a long-running black show that’s relevant and intelligent for more than three seasons? News just broke this afternoon that NBC’s hit multi-cam sitcom The Carmichael Show will not be renewed for a fourth season. The news comes as star of the show Jerrod Carmichael announced that he wouldn’t be coming back to the series. Jerrod Carmichael released this statement:
“For three seasons (okay 2.5), I got to make a show that I love with my friends. It’s something I’ve wanted to do since I was 13. Now, I’m excited to go make other things that I love. Thank you to every person who worked on or watched The Carmichael Show.”
Honestly, I don’t know what happened! The Carmichael Show brought in pretty good ratings and made headlines every week. Many fans started to convert over to the show via binge-watches on Netflix and the third season of the show just started a month ago. Maybe there’s something going on behind the scenes that we don’t know about just yet. According to reports, season three was supposed to premiere in the Spring but was held over until May 31st for currently undisclosed reasons.
Nevertheless, the show was timely and broached every possible angle to an issue that they could in the small window that they had. Their approach to topics caused much controversy. An episode about mass shootings was pulled in respect to the shooting at the GOP Baseball game just this month. That episode was aired this past Wednesday. So far in season three they confronted rape, the use of the “N” word, porn addiction and respect for the troops. The show was a flashback to the Good Times, Cosby Show & A Different World of the 20th century. I wish the best for everybody involved with the show. But, a part of me hopes that Jerrod Carmichael and NBC see how much fanfare the show has amid this cancellation and decides to renew it before the season is over. Hey, I can dream can’t I?
