As we all know, rapper prodigy of the legendary group Mobb Deep passed away yesterday morning from his lifelong battle with sickle cell anemia. We immediately took to honor the hip hop king for his contributions to the culture that we love so dearly. However, after research, we found that Mobb Deep truly has royalty in his DNA! Prodigy is the great-great-great-grandson of the founder of Morehouse College William Jefferson White. Even Prodigy didn’t know this fact until he started doing research for his book My Infamous Life. William J. White was a civil rights leader, minister, educator, and journalist based in Augusta, Georgia. He was also the founder of Harmony Baptist Church in Augusta in 1869.
Morehouse College (then called the Augusta Institute) was founded in 1867, two years after the end of the Civil War, The school was founded to educate African American men in theology and education and was located in Springfield Baptist Church in Augusta, the oldest independent black church in the United States. The institution moved from Augusta, Georgia, to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1879. In 1913, the school was renamed Morehouse College in honor of Dr. Henry L. Morehouse, corresponding secretary of the American Baptist Home Mission Society.
Prodigy provided us quite a history lesson when he disclosed this information in his book. In honor of our fallen legend, we suggest you go get his book My Infamous Life on Amazon today!
