I don’t know why, but we’ve been experiencing an influx of celebrity deaths these past three years. However, this one hits home for all hip-hop fans. It’s being reported that hip-hop legend Prodigy of Mobb Deep has passed away today. He was 42 years old. Prodigy suffered from sickle cell anemia his whole life and that seems to be what caused his death. He was found unconscious this morning. Mobb Deep’s publicist shared a statement with Hip-Hop magazine XXL, saying:
“It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary NY rap duo Mobb Deep. Prodigy was hospitalized a few days ago in Vegas after a Mobb Deep performance for complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis. As most of his fans know, Prodigy battled the disease since birth. The exact causes of death have yet to be determined. We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family’s privacy at this time.”
Outside of this statement, no more information has been released. My heart goes out to his family in this trying time. Fans around the world, be strong. Although we lost a legend today, his legacy and body of work still lives on.
