The Injustice of Being a Black Man| Black Man Serving 10 Year Sentence Despite ‘Not Guilty’ Verdict

Let’s make sure we continue to share and update this story about a young man who did everything right but is being forced to time for a crime he did not commit.

The judicial system has been doing a great job at teaching black people that we don’t matter, not our lives, not our families, not even our will and determination to do the right thing because although a jury found a black man “not guilty” of an armed robbery a judge is refusing to release him from jail.

Ramad Chatman was wanted for armed robbery. He turned himself in to clear his name. He was on probation for breaking into a home and stealing a television but was doing everything in his power to stay on the straight and narrow.

It was his first offense. He got a job, paid his fine, and never missed an appointment with his probation officer.

After turning himself in the judge believed it was likely that Chatman was responsible for the armed robbery and went back to re-sentence him for theft of the television.

He sentenced Chatman to 10 years in prison for the theft of the television. Proceeding the trial for the armed robbery of the convenience store the jury found Chatman “not guilty.” The judge is forcing Chatman to serve a harsher sentence of 10 years for a crime he was already sentenced to 5 years of probation for committing.

How is this legal? Is it that the judge doesn’t believe people are capable of changing?

It’s sad because if were a white male that raped someone he would be at home instead of in jail.
