Jaywalker Beaten In Street By Cop Says “Racially Biased” Abuse Continued In Jail

Nandi Cain Jr., 24, was confronted by a Sacremento, CA, officer for jaywalking and was repeatedly punched in an incident caught on camera.

He was arrested for resisting arrest and charged with previously missing a Fresno court date that dated back to a trespassing case from 5 years previous when he was homeless.

He says that later he was stripped naked, beaten and taunted by the jail guards and now he filed a federal lawsuit against Sacramento city and county officials saying that the “racially biased” abuse has violated his constitutional rights and that it left him with untreated concussion, a black eye, a broken nose and a mental condition.

The officer was identified in the lawsuit as  Anthony Figueroa. The video showed them exchanging words, Cain removed his jacket and the officer tackled him and punched him several times.

The lawsuit says:

“After robbing Mr. Cain of his manhood and basic human dignity, the men left him alone in his cell, without medical attention, food or the opportunity to make a phone call,”

He was released hours later because of insufficient evidence for the resisting-arrest charge.

His attorney, John Burris, said that Cain’s crime as  “walking while black.”
