Did You Know These 12 Nursery Rhymes Were Racist?

A lot of older songs, stories and rhymes have a dark past and come from an era where openly teaching kids to be racist was not frowned upon. You could argue that not much has changed but it’s shocking to learn the original words to some of these rhymes.

Atlanta Black Star put together an excellent video where they showed 12 rhymes that we all know that were originally sang with racist lyrics.

The first up is Eenie, Meeine Moe which originally used the word “Ni**er” instead of “Tiger” in the line “Catch a tiger by the toe” (I’d actually heard this already).

Then Five Little Monkies jumping on the bed used to be “Darkies” or the N-word too!

Watch the video below to learn about the other 10 and please share with us any they did not cover.
