The memorial that marks the place where the body of Emmett Till was found has sadly been defaced, more than 50 bullet holes have destroyed the monument.

This week the sorry state of the memorial came to light after a facebook post by filmmaker Kevin Wilson Jr. went viral. The post from Oct 16. said, “clear evidence we still have a long way to go.”

The public outrage led to the police saying they just don’t have the funds for constant repair. So a crowdfunding campaign, spearheaded by the Emmett Till Interpretive Center started with the aim to raise $15,000.

Now, they’ve aimed $27,000 and they posted,

“We have reached our goal! But we are not done. We hope to continue our work of telling the truth. We sincerely thank everyone for their support and for giving us hope.
