Post genocide Rwanda has had a struggle to rebuild it’s economy, pull the people back together and cut ties with it’s dark past. In these kinds of circumstances certain things are usually put on the back burner and environment is pushed aside for industrial and economonical progress.

But Rwanda is trying to be careful with it’s path and did something innovative. In 2008 the nation made it illegal to possess or use non-biodegradable polythene bags. Yes, plastic bags are illegal.

So when you fly in, your luggage will be checked through, all your plastic bags will be destroyed and smugglers can face harsh punishment!

The ban is said to have been problematic most for industry, however some sources have reported a dark side to coming to terms with the ban with Al Jazeera saying that many of the country’s poor depended on plastic bags for their livelihood and day to day lives.

What do you think about this ban?
