If you have not been paying attention the past decade or so, the FDA hasn’t been doing a stellar job keeping the food and drugs we consume safe for us and our future. You would be hard pressed to find a hardcore FDA fan among the American population. However, not having the FDA inspect the majority of food seems a bit frightening to me. How about you?

The Government Shutdown has been a nightmare for many Americans. Some have been furloughed from their jobs, which mean they don’t receive any paychecks. Others have had their child care stopped and still others worse. However, for the average American, life hasn’t changed much as far as the eye can see.

However, the with the news that the FDA isn’t inspecting food these days, many are concerned.

The Food and Drug Administration had to furlough 45 percent of its workers. This lead to them stopping their food safety inspections. So what does this mean?

This means about 91 percent of seafood, 50 percent of fruits and 20 percent of vegetables being imported into the U.S. are going un-inspected. (Many local and state agencies, are continuing inspections, though, but getting the word out if they find anything may be a problem.)

Neal Hooker, of the John Glenn School of Public Affairs at Ohio State University, told the Christian Science Monitor, “Management of, say, a product recall, and helping local public-health agencies work more effectively, those parts will be harder to do.” The FDA will continue to manage high-risk food recalls and other “critical public health issues,” according to the shutdown memo, which is good, we suppose, but we’re not wild about the image of all manner of substandard food flooding the U.S.

So there you have it, UI Family. In addition to the FDA allowing all sorts of questionable farming tactics, GMO foods, and much worse, now they are not even inspecting the food that you consume. How frightening is this?
