Nashville to Build Health Center for Mentally Ill Arrestees

Davidson County jail in Nashville, Tenn, is currently under construction, in the jail facilities there will be a special department for mentally ill prisoners. This is the first jail of its kind and surly a step into the future. It is believed that in this way the crime rate in Nashville can be drastically reduced.

The center will be finished by the end of 2018 unfortunately families of ill prisoners have a long wait ahead of them.

Nashville is beginning to understand the importance of treatment for the mentally ill due to the fact that most of them are not aware of their actions. Life in captivity can harm them and without the necessary therapy every day is a struggle.

It is for this reason these prisoners are returning are repeatedly returning to prison, they simply haven’t received proper treatment. This is a big problem for all taxpayers, not only for the ill persons and their loved ones, especially when you consider the fact that 30% of the Davidson County prison population is mentally ill. County sheriff Hall believes that the program will benefit about 3,000 prisoners per year.

This solution will not only save taxpayers millions of dollars, but will also provide mentally ill prisoners with adequate medical care which in turn will minimize their chances of returning to prison.

The therapy center for mentally ill prisoners will focus on behavioral therapy.

By applying this method, it is expected that the prisoners would be willing to accept further medical treatment provided in community.

Hopefully the success of this program will inspire other states to develop similar facilities. Essentially people who commit crimes, especially minor ones, are supposed to leave prison rehabilitated and ready to become productive citizens. Instead many of them come out worse than when they went in and end up becoming repeat offenders. This will definitely help the high percentage of mentally ill prisoners get the help they need in order to live productive lives.
