Unless you have been under a rock the last few weeks, I am sure you have heard Season 3 of Scandal is coming back. Starring Kerry Washington and executive produced by Shonda Rhimes, this show has a huge following in the black community, but has drawn an abundance of negative controversy inside the black community.
The story lines in Scandal are explosive to say the least. The main character, Olivia Pope, played by Washington, is a Washington “fixer” who has an infidelity filled relationship with the white President of the United States, Fitzgerald “Fitz” Grant, played by Tony Goldwyn. To say this show is filled with straight drama is an understatement.
One of the main supporters of this show is black women. This has caused much of the controversy as opponents have argued that black women are being hypocrites loving this show when the main character is constantly involved with infidelity, number one, and in a relationship with a white male, the President. Other objections to the show are the poor screen image of black women in positions of power being excessively aggressive, or bitchy, broken and needed all wrapped into one person.
4 Reasons To Watch Scandal Despite All The Negative Hype
Let me say, this isn’t a position I seen myself taking on this issue at anytime, but I think all the pile on is a bit excessive, so let’s get into it. Here are my reasons you should watch Scandal despite all this negative publicity from certain areas of the black community.
1. It’s Just A Damn TV Show
I am from the camp that negative images are powerful and ruin our mental state of mind, but sometimes I feel we are giving the media and this show too much power. Seriously, we control the remotes. It isn’t like these shows come on without our consent. We are grown men and women, so we should be able to control the level of media manipulation we allow into our lives. T
his is just one damn tv show that is built for entertainment purposes. Should you be allowing your children and teenagers to watch this show, no. I don’t think that is appropriate. Young impressionable minds should be exposed to this. However, rational adults should be able to make their own decisions for what they want to watch. And if you do, then I think you will enjoy the show.
2. Support Black Hollywood
We complain about the shrinking roles of blacks in Hollywood and dream about more opportunity. Many even say we should start taking the reigns and start doing for self. Well, two of our black Hollywood members are doing just that. Kerry Washington is a classy, throwback starlet we long for on the silver and big screen. A grown woman that keeps her clothes on in public, is engaged in the political atmosphere outside of her job, well spoken, and articulate as well.
Secondly, this woman Shonda Rhimes is an amazing executive producer. She is putting black folks in charge of writing, casting, filming, editing and more on her multitude of shows she has on ABC, which include Grey’s Anatomy and recently canceled after multiple seasons, The Practice. This woman is no joke!
3. The Writing is EXCELLENT!
This is a continuation of me ringing Shonda Rhimes’ bell because the writing is excellent. If this show was all black everything, most of you would be all over it because the writing is amazing. However, since she has the scandal of a white President with a black mistress, we are allowing that to cloud our vision of this project.
The woman is outstanding. I have been watching all of her shows she has been the executive producer has been excellent. Excellent I tell you!
4. What are your reasons to watch Scandal?
Leaving number four up to you. Tell us why you think the black community should be watching this show. Or, share why you think we are in left field and the black community should stay away with it completely.
