A judge in South Carolina declared a mistrial in the trial of former policeman Michael Slager, who killed unarmed motorist Walter Scott by shooting him in the back last year.
Clear video evidence showed the shooting yet a jury failed to reach a unanimous decision.
The jury were deadlocked in an 11 to 1 majority in favor of convicting Slager for murder or manslaughter.
The 1 had told the judge “I cannot and will not change my mind,”. This led to a weekend more of deliberations.
However, after the weekend nothing changed and a mistrial was called.
After the call Scotts family stood outside the court house. The family attorney, Chris Sewart said:
“If you thought we were going to come out crying, weeping, weak, then you don’t know the Scott family,”
“That was Round One … [Slager] may have delayed justice but he did not escape it.”
And Scott’s mother, Judy, delivered a strong message saying:
“It’s not over. Y’all hear me?”
“It’s not over ’til God says its over.”
“We have the federal trial and another trial,”
“I’m just waiting on the Lord.”
Watch her words below:
Scott’s brother, Anthony Scott, asked for patience and calm saying:
“We’re gonna trust God, he said. “We’re not gonna tear up this city.”
