Morgan State University is one of the oldest private institutions in the nation founded to educate black students and also the largest of its kind in Maryland.

Now, the historic University has won a title of “National Treasure” from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This means the group with work with the University to ensure it’s cultura legacy and it’s architecture.

Founded in 1867 the Baltimore area campus includes 20 buildings that are all eligible for listing status. Many of which came from black architects.

Stephanie Meeks, president and chief executive officer of the National Trust, said in a release.

“The National Trust believes historically black colleges and universities tell an important and often overlooked American story,”
