Last week a Long Beach police officer left her 3 year-old alone in her patrol car for at least four hours while she “visited” with her shift supervisor. The car was running with the AC on when authorities discovered the unattended vehicle. The 3 year old, Cheyenne Hyer, was unresponsive and rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. The child’s mother Officer Cassie Barker who was placed on paid leave while the department conducted an investigation has now been fired along with her shift supervisor Sgt. Clark Lander.
This was not Barker’s first disciplinary action, an incident occurred in May 2015, less than a year after she joined the police department as a rookie in September 2014. Although Police Chief Wayne McDowell did not go into detail about why Barker was suspended, he did say she was suspended last year for one week without pay and her one-year probationary period as a new police officer was extended for an additional 90 days as a result of her actions.
Investigator Glenn Grannan in Mississippi’s Hancock County said, “Somebody is going to be accountable for the baby’s death…There isn’t a reason so far that has happened that would indicate that Cassie wouldn’t be held accountable in some way under the guidelines of Mississippi’s criminal code. But it’s our responsibility to look at all the information.”
Although she has been fired, charges have yet to be filed.
