It seems rare that the deaths of unarmed black men even see any justice, officer after officer have been essentially set free or slapped on the wrist, or just shuffled out of public view.
In what seems like a small victory, and maybe partially thanks to the people of Tulsa taking to the streets, the officer who shot and killed unarmed Terence Crutcher is now facing manslaughter charges.
Tulsa Police Department Officer Betty Shelby is being charged with first-degree manslaughter according to to Tulsa County District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler.
He said in a press conference that “A warrant has been issued for her arrest,” and that arrangements are being made with Shelby’s attorney for Shelby’s surrender.
She has been taken into custody by the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Department.
Kunzweller went onto say that Terrence’s death “was on the hearts and minds of many people in this community,” and he said that the community “has consistently demonstrated a willingness to respect the judicial process.”
It sounds a little like he is trying to calm people’s anger but at least some movement is happening.
The full affidavit for the 1st degree manslaughter charge filed against the officer can be seen below.
Tiffany Crutcher, Terrence’s sister said that “We want a conviction, and when that happens, this is a small victory, but we know we have to get ready to fight this war.”
