ASAP ROCKY: “What the F#%* Am I Al Sharpton Now?”

Public figures are expected to release statements or even speak briefly on society’s ills. It’s something that fans and critics anticipate when communities are in crisis, especially if the issue plagues the community from which they came.

Rappers aren’t immune to this. In fact, Hip Hop’s beginnings over 30 years ago was marked by political overtones and until this day, consciousness in the genre-despite trends- has not faltered.

But every now and then, there’s a celebrity who doesn’t wish to speak on any issues. ASAP Rocky has expressed just that an so much more.

In a 2015 TimeOut Magazine interview that recently reemerged, the New York rapper voiced his frustrations on being expected to speak on issues, namely Black Lives Matter.

“They’re not forcing me to do s—. I’m just gonna stay black and die. Why, because I’m black? So every time something happens because I’m black I gotta stand up? What the f— am I, Al Sharpton now? I’m ASAP Rocky. I did not sign up to be no political activist. I wanna talk about my mother—— lean, my best friend dying, the girls that come in and out of my life, the jiggy fashion that I wear, my new inspirations in drugs! I don’t wanna talk about no f——- Ferguson and s— because I don’t live over there! I live in f—— Soho and Beverly Hills. I can’t relate. I’m in the studio; I’m in these fashion studios; I’m in these b—— drawers. I’m not doing anything outside of that. That’s my life.”

SOUND OFF: What do you think? Is it his social duty to speak up about injustices or is he right?
