On Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 11am Buckroe Beach in Hampton, VA the Sankofa Projects celebrated their 5th annual International Day of Remembrance honoring African slaves in the Middle Passage.
From a 2015 article Chadra Pittman Walke, founder and executive director of the Sankofa Projects explained:
Just as important to remember are the Africans who died in the Middle Passage in the trans-Atlantic slave trade, those who never made it to the Americas in the first place,
And
“Here in Virginia we have the beginning of slavery in Point Comfort and the emancipation of slavery at Fort Monroe,” she said. “Millions were lost in the middle. No one talks about the middle.”

We cannot know thier names but we can feel thier presence in the sea winds that take the people home when they learned to fly. They are the part of us missing though always here.
