A Childhood Kiss From A White Girl Led To A Life In And Out Of Prison

James Hanover Thompson and his friend David Simpson were just 7 and 9 when they supposedly committed a serious crime.

In 1958 in North Carolina things were tough for blacks.

Dwight Hanover recently learned of the the awful story when talking to his brother James.

James told the story of how he and his friend, two black boys, were playing in a white neighborhood. A white girl came and gave them a kiss on the cheek as part of a dare.

The girl told her parents and they reported the boys.

The two children were detained for six days without being able to speak to or see their parents! They were heavily beatne and sent to reform school where they were supposed to stay until 21 years old!

The boys remained in detention for 3 months and it took pleading from the NCAAP and Eleanor Roosevelt for them to be released.

James was said to have changed after this terrible experience and for much of his adult life he was in and out of prison for robbery.

Of course noone knows how James would have been without this awful event but it’s not hard to imagine it seriously affected him!
