Tamir Rice, Laquan McDonald, Sandra Bland, Michael Brown, Oscar Grant, and the list goes on. I don’t have to explain these stories because most of us are familiar with them. Police brutality has been a problem in the black community since its humble beginnings, when they were known as slave catchers. Something that was founded on corrupt and inhumane principles will be hard to change. But there are three teens that have found a new way to deal with this troubling issue.
Shortly after Michael Brown was shot in the back by a Ferguson Police officer, the siblings decided to create this app. After discussion with their parent about police brutality and how it effects African Americans, their parents stressed the importance of finding a solution to the problem. So that’s what they did!
To prevent the list of unarmed African Americans killed by police from growing Ima 18, Asha 16, and Caleb Christian 15, created an app called Five-0. Five-0 allows you to document your interaction, good or bad, with law enforcement using the state, zip code, county, and or city. The app contains a “know your rights” function to inform users of lawful and unlawful police conduct. They are in the process of updating the app by adding a function for users to alert friends and family if they’ve been pulled over along with your location.
