Black Friday Protests Planned For Chicago’s Famous Michigan Ave Shopping District

After two nights of protests in Chicago, that followed the release of the video showing the killing of an unarmed black teen by a police officer (shot 16 times), momentum and organisation is growing and now supporters are being urged for a bigger demonstration this black friday to close down the famous Michigan Avenue shopping district.

The dashcam video showed officer Jason Van Dyke shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, infact firing an entire magazine. He has been charged with first-degree murder but after more than 500 days and allegations of a cover up. Including a court order needed for police to release the dashcam footage.

The protests are more than just about this killing though, a seeming string of deaths againts unarmed black citizens is plauging the media and to be black on America’s streets now feels unsafe for many African Americans.

Protesters were parading photos of others who have been shot by police in Chicago and throughout the country. Many parents of men killed by officers were said to be present.

So who is behind the planned protests?

A number of people seem to be involved from activists to black youth. Activist Mark Carter has been asking people to “rise up” and shut down the shopping area and other landmark areas are also being targeted.

The aim of the protest seems to be asking police to investigate cover ups and why this behavior is happening.
