Yesterday, the former world’s No. 4 ranked tennis star suffered a reality facing black men and women across the country, police brutality and assuming all black people are criminals. Not even world wide exposure and a Harvard education can save black people from this reality.
It happened Wednesday, Sept 9th outside Blake’s Manhattan hotel. He was standing in front of his hotel on his way to make a corporate appearance for Time Warner Cable at the U.S. Open.
Five, white, plain clothes police officers rushed Blake, tackled him to the ground, and held him there in front of the Grand Hyatt hotel for 15 minutes, according to the New York Daily News who first reported the abuse of power.
Apparently, they didn’t let him up until he showed his U.S. Open credentials.
“It was definitely scary and definitely crazy,” Blake told the outlet. “In my mind there’s probably a race factor involved, but no matter what there’s no reason for anybody to do that to anybody.”
[ADSENSE2]”You’d think they could say, ‘Hey, we want to talk to you. We are looking into something,'” Blake continued. “I was just standing there. I wasn’t running.”
Blake is 35 years old and a graduate from Harvard. He was dressed professionally, not making direct eye contact with the cops, and STANDING STILL on the sidewalk, not running or looking suspicious.
People can pretend if you look a certain way, dress a certain way, talk a certain way or go to certain colleges, you will be immuned to the presistent brutality and horrible treatment by the police if you like, but you will be living in a delusion.
What’s great about this story is Blake doesn’t want to sweep the incident under the rug, but use his fame, influence and reputation to ensure these “officers” are brought to justice because there isn’t any telling how many other people these hooligans have done similar things to that don’t have the voice he has.
“I have resources to get to the bottom of this. I have a voice,” he said. “But what about someone who doesn’t have those resources and doesn’t have a voice? The real problem is that I was tackled for no reason and that happens to a lot of people who don’t have a media outlet to voice that to,” he continued, adding he would like an apology from the police department and for the officers involved to face repercussions for their extreme actions.
