Five months after 25 year old Freddie Gray was killed while in the custody of the Baltimore police department, the city reaches a tentative settlement of $6.4 million with Gray’s parents. The Gray killing set off an outrage throughout Baltimore and across the country.

The timing is interesting being it is just a few days prior to a judge deciding if the six officers involved in the killing of Freddie Gray should be charged with murder. The country awaits this decision.

It should be noted the settlement isn’t final just yet and still has to be approved by a board that watches the city’s spending. This meeting will happen Wedensday, according to Yahoo.

However, this settlement should not be viewed as an admission of guilt by the city of Baltimore. The Mayor drives that point home in this quote.

“The proposed settlement agreement going before the Board of Estimates should not be interpreted as a judgment on the guilt or innocence of the officers facing trial,” Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said in a news release. “This settlement is being proposed solely because it is in the best interest of the city, and avoids costly and protracted litigation that would only make it more difficult for our city to heal and potentially cost taxpayers many millions more in damages.”

Can’t wait to find out what happens Thursday when the judge rules if the 3 white cops and 3 black cops should be tried in the murder of Freddie Gray.
