In case you missed it, the 57th Annual Grammy Awards were yesterday in Los Angeles. The event brought the stars for the big night to honor the music industries best and brightest. High fashion took front stage as many in the black community wondered why we are still enamored with these pageants and awards.

The movie “Selma”, which didn’t get the praise many expected from the Oscars, was central to the nights controversy which starred the flawless Beyonce. Her rendition of the  gospel hit “Take My Hand, Precious Lord” made famous by Mahalia Jackson and performed by Ledisi in the movie, wasn’t received very well.

Many fans of the movie wondered why Ledisi wasn’t asked to do the song at the Grammys. She was in attendance afterall and would have seemed like the logical choice. Nevertheless, Beyonce was chosen and apparently her performance left a lot to be desired.

When asked about the brewing controversy and snub by the Grammy producers, Ledisi took the high road and wouldn’t engage in mud slinging and nonsense that seemed to be expected of her. He exuded grace, elegance and class in the face of the media.

When asked why aren’t you singing the song, she said:

“What I will say and what I’m excited about is that I had the pleasure of playing an iconic figure in Selma, and the song, ‘Take My Hand, Precious Lord,’ it’s been going on forever – starting with the queen Mahalia [Jackson], the queen of soul Aretha Franklin.”

She continued, “Then, I was able to portray and sing my version of the song, and now we have Beyonce. Her generation will now know the song, so I’m a part of history.”
