I’m the KING of New York, in my Funkmaster Flex voice, HOT 97, New York’s undisputed top, mainstream, urban music radio personality and resident DJ, wants everyone to know, especially Jay Z.
Insert stage right, The Source online pub, reporting this morning, a group of investors, which include Jay Z and New York Knick, Carmello Anthony are in negotiations to buy the radio station, New York’s HOT 97 FM.
This, after Flex literally flexed his radio mouth piece, in a long rant which included this statement.
“In 2015, you are a commercial, corporate rapper that drops a little catchphrase every three months,” Flex said. “There’s nothing wrong with that. I think that’s super dope. Don’t talk to me funny in the text, bruh. I don’t work for you.”
NOW THAT IS HOT! There is nothing entertainment execs and radio listeners want more than Jay Z, the corporate rapper, to come into HOT 97 and make a BOSS MOVE!
You know this, but let us slow down for one second and ask a question, for fear of being played, again.
Q: Who benefits from the conflict?
A: Flex is not trying to commit career suicide and he has to know this would ruffle some feathers. Your radio station isn’t underground. You have to play what the people want to hear and they want to hear Jay Z corporate rap. If we let history write this script it goes like this. Funkmaster Flex is offered a nice payout and setup to stir the beefaroni between he and Jay Z. The controversy, gets attention and drives the negotiations. In all it is a WIN WIN, for Flex’s pocket and Jay Z’s brand.
I hope this article doesn’t suggest Flex is a perpetrator. In fact, next year about this time I expect him and Jay Z to get academy noms for the best actor and supporting actor categories.
Stop eating what they’re serving. You know it don’t taste good to get played.
