Our people are kind, compassionate and helpful to others. I know this isn’t the image you see in the mass media, but it is true. This story here is just one small example this.

A young, black Florida teenager was honored Tuesday for his role in saving the life of a police officer as he was being processed for an arrest. He violated a parole violation, but the officer was thankful the young man didn’t hold any grudges and acted quickly.

It happened in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Jamal Rutledge was being processed for violating criminal mischief and burglary probation violations by Officer Franklin Foulks, according to WTVJ. The video of the situation was recently released.

Officer Foulks collapsed to the ground. Rutledge, handcuffed behind his back was the only one present at the scene, “immediately began to kick the security fence and yell to alert officers in the area.” This according to a statement from the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.

Fortunately for the officer, Rutledge’s quick thinking and response got the attention of Sgt. Todd Bunin who was able to contact Officers Robert Norvis and Raymond Ketchmark, who arrived to assist Bunin.

They performed CPR and used an Automated External Defibrillator to restore the heart beat for the fallen officer.

“Broward Health Medical Staff noted that Rutledge’s actions and the quick response of these officers were largely responsible for Officer Foulks surviving this medical episode,” the statement noted.

At the next Fort Lauderdale Commission Meeting, January 21, Rutledge and the officers will be honored for their heroic acts and  quick thinking. It isn’t likely the officer would have survived had Rutledge not acted so quickly.

Why Save The Officer Arresting You?

You might be wondering why the youth would act to save the officer arresting him and I guess that is a fair question, but you just have to understand the humanity that lives within our souls. We are not the people they depict us to be on television and in the movies, heartless and callous to the world.

We are a forgiving, loving people who only want to do right by the world. Just because this officer was doing his job and arresting Rutledge on a parole violation doesn’t mean the young man should fight his nature, his humanity and the culture of his people.
