It finally is going to happen! The world reknown comedia and international human and civil rights activist Dig Gregory will join Hollywood immortality by receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. February 2nd, 2015 is the date his star will be added, but we are a bit surprised.

Not surprised by Gregory’s talent or the fact that he deserves it because that is undeniable by anyone.

Gregory began his career in the 1950’s and by the early 1960’s was a nationally known comedian and headliner. She sold out nightclubs from coast to coast, made national television appearances, and even recorded comedy albums.

dick gregoryHe is the one that tore the roof off of comedy for other popular black comedians to come after him. The likes of Bill Cosby, Richard Prior, Eddie Murphy might not have ever been noticed if it were not for Gregory and his superior insight, intelligence, comedic timing and satire.

“Dick Gregory is the godfather of comedy” and a “groundbreaking entertainer,” said activist and radio host Joe Madison.

Madison, who led the effort to secure Gregory’s spot on the Walk of Fame along with E. Faye Williams, national chair of the National Congress of Black Women, and others, said the recognition was long overdue.

“If anybody deserves a star on the Walk of Fame it is Dick Gregory,” the SiriusXM host said. “He should have had a star on the Walk of Fame decades ago.”

Even more than his star power, Gregory’s social conscience and continued connection to everyday people is what qualifies him for this recognition, Williams told the AFRO.

“He’s not like other celebrities who shun people when they become a star,” she said. “He’s always willing to listen to you, spend time with you or share his knowledge.”

In fact, it is Gregory’s knowledge and willingness to share it that has us a bit surprised that he is actually receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Gregory has long been known to have bucked the mainstream views of history, culture and racial tensions in this country and world. And he hasn’t been afraid to talk about it either.

There are hundreds of videos of him floating around speaking truth to power and thousands of quotes. The way he takes care of himself, it seems like he doesn’t plan on slowing down any time soon.

Nevertheless, we love and honor the man known as Dick Gregory and are glad to see his talents and contributions to the world of comedy and entertainment being recognized.
