Many have heard about the hazing rituals that go on in the world of collegiate activities. Everyone from the sports teams to the black green letter organizations are rumored to participate in these activities, but few expected band members.

That was until members of the Florida A&M band was convicted and tried for hazing death of a young man in 2011.

dante-martin-famu-hazing26 year old Robert Champion was brutally beat to death by members of the FAMU band in their hazing ritual. He was from Decatur, Georgia, and the drum major.

The leader and the first person convicted and tried for the death of Champion was Dante Martin.

Martin was recently sentence to almost six and half years in prison for his role in the hazing death. Judge Renee Roche sentenced Martin to a total of 77 months Friday on manslaughter and felony hazing.

15 others are awaiting their time to be tried. All are expected to receive prison time for their roles in the death of Robert Champion.

Let this serve as notice to parents and young adults out there. Just because organizations have routinely participated in hazing rituals, it doesn’t mean it is only fun and games. People can get hurt, killed and someone will go to jail.
