Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed to fight corruption saying that 0 billion was looted from Nigerian state coffers over the past decade.
Around $5 billion of that is believed to have been “looted” by one man in particular. Sani Abacha, the military leader who ruled Nigeria between 1993 and 1998 is the culprit.
Much of his stolen cash was filtered through to Swiss bank accounts and it seems Nigeria and Buhari’s government are managed to bring some of the cash home.
Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama already managed to secure $700m repatriated to the country after Switzerland retrieved t from Abacha’s accounts and right now another $300m is being negotiated.
The sums seem huge but against the $5 billion, almost nothing.
The extent of corruption over the past decade is just mind numbing to think about and it’s clear how this level of corruption has led to huge issues in a country that seriously needs development and cash.
Nigeria is Africa’s biggest economy and maybe if Buhari keeps to his promise he can help them rise from this terrible past.
