Kalief Browder was victim of the mass incarceration epidemic that plagues this country specifically the black community. Browder’s unfortunate death opened our eyes to the predatory behavior of law enforcement in the black community. They practice incarcerating black men with little to no evidence of their guilt and then hold them on bail, which we know most low income families cannot afford, to await trial. They also incarcerate black men and women for petty crimes, like unpaid fines, knowing they cannot afford bail because if they could they would have paid the fines. Which is one reason we make up only 30 percent of the country’s population yet we account for more than 60 percent of the prison population.
Well now we have a way to help black men and women post bail. No this is not the end all, be all but it’s a start. Visit the website appolition.us. This site was created by Kortney Ziegler, a social engineer, and his co-founder Tiffany Mikell.
In an interview with Konbini, Ziegler explained his motivation for creating the app:
“I was inspired by the work of National Bail Out and their work in bringing together black led community bail funds to provide relief for black folks who needed support.”
The app is very easy to use. You sign up on appolition.us by inserting your account information. Every time you make a purchase they will round up to the nearest dollar and donate your spare change to incarcerated black men and women who cannot afford bail. Simple. You can also turn the feature on and off as you choose.
Sometimes we choose to do nothing because we can only do a little, forgetting that sometimes a little goes a long way.
